Track #3: Mojave Country
One man, an Indian, took a long walk through a desert land
And he walked on by a Western Sky on the Chumash Trail where the Tongva lie
He walked for days underneath the sun rays
In the Valley of the Smoke lay a great a big haze
But he had to go to the ocean below to trade all his goods before the winter snow
Chorus
He sang: “I don’ t know if I will ever see my wife and family
I belong now to the canyons and the desert prairie
Looking East, I see the mountains past Mojave Country
I am on my way”
He stopped to rest on a mountain that he blessed
Squinting his eyes he saw the Water to the West
And he walked on down to a Chumash town
To see what goods they had for him to be found
Chorus
He said, “I have come so you can take all that you need now from me.
I’m in need of goods so I can feed my wife and family
Looking West, I see the Islands past your Chumash Country
I am on my way”
On his way back home in the Desert all alone
Everything was dry – he could feel it to the bone
And he looked to the sky with his mind’s eye
Saw his whole world change
Change with no goodbye
Chorus
He sang “I don’ t know if I will ever see my wife and family
I belong now to the canyons and the desert prairie
Looking East I see the mountains past Mojave Country
I am on my way”
